Small Steps…

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

My time rolls on. Since I have been moved to Brazil I felt that I had to take the time to learn the city of Salvador. That being my first order of business, I went about it and feel I have accomplished it. With Christmas approaching, it is getting hot. Summer is peaking and it will soon come to full force. I now think about how I have not been through a Salvador summer since before I moved to America more then eighteen years ago. Since the summer in America is winter here, and that is the only time I had the chance to come and visit, I missed out on the experience. I feel prepared for it and cant wait. Carnival is coming soon as well, and it is a huge street party here in Salvador and many say a whole lot better then in Rio, there it is more of a parade. In Salvador it is millions of people hitting the streets for a few days and getting crazy.

Before Carnival their is a more of a religious festival called Lavagem do Bonfim (Washing of Bonfim church) Second Thursday in January. A Candomblé festival culminating in the ritual cleansing of Bonfim church in Salvador, Bahia. This year it falls on the 14th of January, I had not heard much about this festival but from what I am told that people walk from a point to a Bonfim Church for the cleansing ritual. But afterwords there is also a great party that takes place and I am told it is a fun as Carnival. Candomblé is a religion with its origins in Catholicism and old traditional African religions, so it should be great. I am looking very foreword to it because it should be a great opportunity to take great photos.

Arrival.

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

After sometime of not seeing my mom she arrives here in Brazil on Thursday, I am very excited. I have been cleaning my house like crazy, you know all the stuff you do before a parent arrives.

This weekend I am going to a friends farm. Well he is the boyfriend of my cousin Lua. Maderson is his name his father owns a farm and it is a holiday this weekend, on Sunday the holiday is called Children’s Day and on Monday it is another holiday so everyone also has off. I think that it will be a very a good time and a great opportunity to tour the outskirts of Salvador. That is something that I have been dying to do. I do not own a car and have not many ways to explore the state of Bahia so I jump at the chance too.

My writing has been chugging along and I can say I am some what happy with my progress. I hope to be done with this book within the year, or at least the last day of the year. If I can get accomplish the completion of this novel it will be great. I accidentally ran into an idea of another book the other day, which is good too.

I am going to take many pictures at the farm this weekend so it will be great. I will post them when I get back.

<Our own happiness is inexplicably bound in the happiness of others.

Everyone changes so much every day, we are never quite aware of the changes that we undergo even with the littlest stroke of time. The world goes on, and keeps doing its thing. To me it’s a very amazing and I for one am grateful for it, it shows the perseverance of people, and ones place among others. The world’s constant state of change is miracle that gives me the want and desire to get up each day.

I have loved Brazil so far and have gotten nothing but help and acceptance from family and those around me. Their seems to be an understanding and patience with me that I cherish and love, and cant being to thank everyone for. One of the best things that moving back to Brazil have given me is the connecting with family. We are shaped by those around us, weather good or bad, it just is and I want to be surrounded by those that I am most comfortable around.

Salvador is a place that I find just my pace, that is to say I never quite felt I moved at the pace America went in, America is not faster or slower because the truth is no matter where you are a person chooses the speed you set your life on. I mean a laid back easy going overwhelming thought is something that has given me an easily adoptable platform to more easily adjust to my move.

I don’t like to think I am different than anyone but I seem to be a person a who is sheltered and an introvert. I am in my head a lot. I like to think and the amount of things to think about when one moves such as I did and has to learn the language and connect with family, and make friends, and find a job has really filled up my head, and has brought a smile to face every minute I have been here so far. The more the better for me, I like the challenge the way I see, the more stacked the harder it is. But I have had a whole lot of help which is great and welcome.

Boa Noite

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I have made it save and sound. The above picture is a view from my balcony, where I eat breakfast in Salvador Bahia Brazil. The ocean is a about a 10 minute walk from here and it is down hill. I also was able to get the Internet as you can see. But I have been very busy doing things that came up. For example when I arrived not only did I not have the Internet but I was not able to plug in my computer to the wall so I had to find an adopter for the plug and that took several days, but once I found everything was good and I could recharge my laptop, and plug the rest of my things in such as my clock radio.

But some of the official things I had to do was to get my enlistment out of the way. Here in Brazil you have to go one of the forts around the city and pledge to the flag, every male has to do it, without doing  it you are not able to get a CPF. Without a CPF you cannot get a job, or for that matter a phone, or many other things that are needed. But today I have finally finished with all that.

I am waken up by a rooster everyday. There are no farms around here so I think the rooster is wild and rooming the streets, that is no so off their are random chickens running around that and wild pack of dogs, the dogs don’t bite they just live on the street and eat up whatever is their. Something else I found is that there is nudity in the newspaper, not just breast but full body as well, it was in the cultural section of the paper the other day, the article was about a photographer in Europe who just showed some work of the female body. Also prostitution is legal here in all of Brazil but in the newspaper in the classified section their are prostitutes adds that you can read, and if your like me get a laugh at, the words they use and the way they advertise is funny, specs.

The city of Salvador is beautiful and I really have been enjoying walking around. I have hit the beach up a few days in the morning and plan on going more often, I just have been running around everywhere getting this stuff out of the way. But now I will enjoy the sun and fun of the winter in Salvador. Yes it is winter now and it has rained every day since i have been here but it is like this, it will rain really hard for about five minutes then stop.
